Does an electron interfere with another?

In the double-slit experiment with electrons, they are sent one by one, with several seconds between each: there are never two electrons in flight at the same time. Yet an interference pattern eventually appears on the screen.

Explain why this observation is so disturbing, and what it teaches us about the nature of the electron. What happens if you try to find out which slit each electron goes through?
