Analyzing a stellar spectrum

Drawing on the concepts covered in this chapter, explain the reasoning by which astronomers manage to determine the chemical composition of a star's atmosphere by observing only its light, without ever sending a probe there. You may in particular explain the role of the continuous spectrum, the absorption lines, and the comparison with reference spectra obtained in the laboratory.
